Birmingham Parent Carer Forum is a voluntary group of Birmingham Parent Carers whose purpose is to become the bridge between services and families and a collective voice representing all members and all disabilities. We aim to build strong and sustainable linksbetween our Local authority, Joint Clinical Commissioning Group and The Children’s Trust.During the financial year 2021-2022, the forum’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways:Used our position in meetings to strive to improve services for children and young people in Birmingham. We have continuously flagged concerns raised to us to the relevant parties in Health, Education and Social Carer.Shared important updates with our membership about key changes and how that will affect them.Held multiple events to inform, upskill and support parents and carers in birmingham these included but were not limited to:EHCP WorkshopsQ&A Sessions with the Newly appointed Department for EducationCommissionerWell Being daysMakaton TrainingWe signpost families in need of support to the relevant organisations.Worked closely with the Local Authority to create a Co-production Charter to be used in Birmingham.
The Forum’s stakeholders are parents or carers of a child or young person (aged 0-25) with additional needs who lives in Birmingham and/or whose child uses Birmingham Education, Health or Social Care Services.The forum Co-produced a Parent Carer Survey with the local authority which sought to ask parents and carers about their experiences with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) service for their child or children in 2022, the survey had over 700 responses.In response to the feedback that was received in the survey the forum penned an open letter to the Local Authority which outlined below key areas where Birmingham parents and carers were feeling a lack of impact and asked that going forward they received clear Communication, Transparency and Accountability around the issues raised. The letter was signed by 224 people including parents and carers as well as SEND professionals.
