Through a partnership with MOTUS (dance festival) in June 21, we led six performances for local shoppers and dance enthusiasts in Milton Keynes at Centre MK. In August 2021, we lead similar performances for museum visitors and local community groups at Torquay Museum. From July-August 2021, we provided a series of participatory workshops to local people to Exeter and Torbay, which culminated in the creation of a community dance film with a local intergenerational community cast, through partnerships with Swindon Dance, United Response and Chhaya Collective. The filmed featured 40 local people and was streamed online and premiered at Exeter Phoenix Cinema. In September-October 2021, we premiered a new production by our professional ensemble of dancers called Infinite Ways Home, for audiences in Exeter and Cardiff through two performances Exeter Northcott and one performance at CULTVR-Lab. In October 2021, we were commissioned by BBC Arts and One Dance UK to create our short film Heart Land for Dance Passions 2022. The film was uploaded online via BBC Arts and streamed on BBC iPlayer. It featured our professional dancers alongside six performances from Yama Dance, which is a community performance ensemble of dancers aged 60+ in Bath. In October 2021, we lead an intensive workshop to young people in Cardiff through National Dance Company Wales Associates programme. This culminated in a short dance film for screening online and at U.Dance Festival. From August 21 to February 22, we worked with National Dance Company Wales, Theatr Clwyd, CULTVR and Impelo to host a commissioning programme for early career choreographers, providing a delivery fee alongside in-kind residency support, performing programming and mentoring to two early career choreographers in Wales. Our production Infinite Ways Home then continued to tour performances in February-March 2022 to audiences at Oxford Playhouse and Taunton Brewhouse. Alongside these performances, we lead participatory workshops to degree students at Rambert School and Bath Spa University, older people through Boundless (Newcastle), and young people at Northwall Arts Centre. In Taunton, we worked with Brewhouse Theatre to lead a workshop series and create a short dance performance by a local community ensemble of people aged 50+ to open our performance. Our performances enrich our audiences wellbeing, broadening their perspectives on emotional and physical expression whilst providing entertaining and immersive experiences. Our work is performed by award winning international artists, making enduring memories for our audiences. Our community participatory focus is on health, wellbeing and self expression. We support people to become more connected to their bodily health and mental health. Our performance projects support people to gain confidence, body awareness and connect communities together to cultivate joy. Our cultural offerings grow community cohesion and intergenerational dialogue. Our activity supports our professional artists to sustainability to grow their practices. Within our programmes, we make space for their learning development and grow our work with them to reflect their career momentum. We provide high quality training, performance employment, mentoring and commissioning support to dance artists, musicians, technicians and visual artists.
Richard Chappell Dance’s stakeholders are divided into funders, arts partners, commissioned/supported artists, community workshop participants and audiences/general public. The funders are consulted on a regular basis prior to the submission of funding bids, on the awards of grants and commissions and via evaluation meetings and reports. Our core funders include The Linbury Trust, Arts Council England and Arts Council Wales. The Arts partners are dance, heritage and arts and culture organisations who support or collaborate on the delivery of our community engagement, performance programming and artist development work. Examples of arts partners include Swindon Dance (dance agency), Torquay Museum (heritage), Exeter Northcott (presenting venue) and National Dance Company Wales (dance company). We also work with partners who do not directly work in the arts but engage with arts organisations, such as Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust. All partner organisations take part in one to one meetings with Richard Chappell Dance CIC during initial project planning periods, through their delivery and after their conclusion as an evaluation. Workshop participants are people who take part in our community participatory workshops, which take the form of individual creative dance workshops, to performance and film projects. Participants offer written feedback after workshops, verbal feedback to camera or fascilitator or online feedback via email and/or social media. The commissioned/supported artists Richard Chappell Dance works with include freelance dancers who are employed to tour the company’s productions alongside artists such as musicians, visual artists, technicians and filmmakers who the company collaborates with. The delivery of the company’s projects and how It works with artists is always refined from feedback in verbal consultations with artists, alongside written evaluations which are submitted after projects finish.
