Models For Heroes (M4H) provides model making material and tools to organisations which support veterans, armed services and emergency services personnel around the UK. Through model building, individuals are provided with an opportunity to engage in a positive diversion activity which is often associated with revisiting pastimes from positive childhood memories. Modelling can help an individual improve their mental health by developing new skills and fine motor control. Model making is a social hobby, which M4H facilitates through regular group activities, attendance at model shows, and online communities.During the financial year 2021-22, M4H dispatched 2597 model kits, and supported model making sessions via a network of 184 volunteers across the UK. M4H has a thriving online and in-person model building session network, with 698 recorded hours of in-person sessions at 45 locations, and 380 recorded hours of online sessions led by 11 volunteers who received additional training. Support workers are able to make referrals for potential beneficiaries to receive a model making starter box, and M4H are proud to have worked with Walking with the Wounded and to have supported 138 individual referrals via their scheme in 2021-22.
The company’s stakeholders include the individual beneficiaries who attend model making sessions or receive referrals, professional support workers who refer their clients to Models For Heroes, host organisations who provide venues for model building sessions, and the volunteers who facilitate online and in-person modelling sessions. In April 2020, an area identified for improvement from an online volunteer survey was that only 67% agreed that they received adequate training or induction to their volunteering role. As a result of this, and with support from National Lottery Funding, additional volunteer training was undertaken in 2021-22, with 16 volunteers attending a 2-day First Aid for Mental Health course over this time period, and online training events offered from the Samaritans (January 2022) and Non-Verbals Toolbox Training (November and December 2021). In a repeated survey during May 2022, 88% of volunteers now agree that they received adequate training or induction to their volunteering role.Beneficiary feedback on their model making activity and wellbeing is surveyed monthly, with 380 responses from 119 beneficiaries received in 2021-22. Data indicates improvements in beneficiary self-reported mood and satisfaction over this time period. Feedback received from professional support workers and host organisations is also published on our website and can be accessed at: https://www.modelsforheroes.org.uk/impact-and-report/.
