ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
Highlights for 2022-2023 include extensively touring our new immersive video installation 'Family Portrait'; returning to international touring with successful 'Tiger' shows; creating new work 'The Unexpected Gift' and undergoing a research period for new pieces 'Chunky Jewellery' and 'ManvBoy'. We were also delighted to continue our Wolf Pack intergenerational company and weekly Professional Class as well as engage with pupils from St Albert's Primary School and Isobel Mair School in a Dance for Camera project funded through Creative Scotland's Youth Arts Access fund. |
National Touring |
Our award-winning immersive installation piece 'Family Portrait' has had another successful year of extensive national touring reaching audiences of 6782 across the year. The piece saw a brilliant 3-week tour with Theatre in Schools Scotland from 19th April - 5th May 2022 with schools across Argyll and Bute, Perth and Kinross, and Glasgow each receiving showings and accompanying dance workshops for their pupils. It was then presented as part of the Edinburgh International Children's Festival on tour programme, visiting St Francis' RC Primary School, South Morningside Primary School, Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pairce and Canal View Primary School before finishing at the Edinburgh International Children's Festival in the Traverse Theatre across the 9th-14th May 2022. The installation was further programmed for a month in The Lowry, Salford as part of their EDIT series exhibition. This was hugely successful reaching an audience of 5005 and provided an exciting opportunity for the company to be based at a venue for an extensive period of time. In addition to the installation, The Lowry curated an exhibition around the themes of the piece, with an interactive feedback wall responding to 'What Family Means to Me'. Barrowland Ballet dance artist, Joanne Pirrie, also supported audiences in creating their own unique family portraits which were then added to a growing portrait gallery as part of the exhibition. Our national touring of 'Family Portrait' for 2022-2023 concluded with a weekend of showings as part of Aberdeen's Dance Live Festival programme in October 2023. With one van required to transport the set and crew, this continues to be Barrowland Ballet's most environmentally friendly touring production to date. |
'The Gift', developed in Winter 2021 through a co-commission with Eden Court Theatre, Aberdeen Performing Arts, and Capital Theatre, had a successful run at Capital Theatre's Studio, Edinburgh from 17th December - 4th January 2023 reaching audiences of 1319 and receiving brilliant reviews. We were thrilled to subsequently receive two nominations for the CATS under the categories of Best Design and Best Production for Children and Young People; winning the CATS Best Production for Children and Young People. |
"Barrowland Ballet's jewel of a dance theatre show...is a real treat of a show that can't be recommended enough." ***** All Edinburgh Theatre |
"The Gift is technically superb, narratively charming, beautifully staged, and genuinely funny." ***** The Quinntessential Review |
"An explosion of imagination and unadulterated emotion and glee" ***** Corr Blimey |
With a beautiful and playful musical score by Davey Anderson, The Gift offers a fabulous 40 minutes of brightly-coloured fun, with a play session on the snowy stage at the end. And if you want to know what "the gift" is - well, friendship, perhaps; or maybe just the joy of imagination itself. **** The Scotsman |
International Touring |
With COVID restrictions lifting world-wide, 2022-2023 has seen Barrowland Ballet tentatively returning to international touring. The rolling out of the international 'Family Portrait' touring model has proved successful with the piece being presented at Hakawy Festival, Egypt; Baboro Festival, Ireland; and Showbox Festival, Norway, with one member of Barrowland Ballet Staff in attendance. Artistic Director, Natasha Gilmore, travelled with the piece to Hakawy Festival, Egypt to deliver accompanying participatory creative sessions and presentations, enhancing and deepening the audience and sectoral engagement with the work. |
Productions 'Tiger Tale' and 'Playful Tiger' also returned to the international touring circuit with four performance at Brightview Festival, Germany and five performances at Dunkers Kulturhus, Sweden as part of Bibu ASSITEJ Gathering reaching a total audience of 648. |

New Work |
In June 2022, Barrowland Ballet completed the final Research and Development week with Jude Williams for new piece 'Chunky Jewellery' with a sharing to an invited audience. It is intended that Barrowland Ballet will take forward the creation and touring of this work as a co-production with Jude Williams in the 2023/24 period, pending further funding being secured. |
A new intergenerational performance work involving professional and non-professional dancers, currently titled 'ManvBoy', was initiated in autumn 2022. This explored the transition from adolescence into manhood; and male role models during this important time. R&D took place in October 2022 consisting of 6 development sessions followed by 2 sold out performance sharing's in Tramway's T4 in November 2022 as part of the showcase event. The showcase event celebrated voices from the Southside of Glasgow, including the work in progress sharing of 'ManvBoy', a performance by Barrowland Ballet's intergenerational company, Wolf Pack, and screenings of new films 'Frames', 'The Tea Party' and 'Hoods Off' created as part of the Dance for Camera film project. The intention for 'ManvBoy' is to develop a full-length highly physical and dynamic performance giving the cast creative agency to explore physical risks, stability, change, youthful exuberance, mood swings, wisdom, guidance and fears. The process will offer the opportunity for all of the cast to be involved in creating the choreography, text and music that they will then perform. |
Barrowland Ballet has been recognised for its developing practice in contemporary dance work with and for neuro-diverse audiences and children with complex needs. In 2022, Capital Theatre provided additional funding in order to support the creation of an adapted, more sensory and interactive version of 'The Gift' with and for children with complex needs such as autism. The adaptation process began in late Autumn 2022, collaborating with pupils from Isobel Mair School, Newton Mearns. The resulting show 'The Unexpected Gift' ran from 9th-13th January in The Studio with 64 audience members across 9 shows receiving brilliant feedback from audiences. |
"Our staff said how magical and moving it was to see the children responding to the performance and to watch the interactions between the artists and the children. It was enchanting. The performers were so talented and attuned to the children. Due to their needs, our children often struggle to be part of a group, to connect with learning and experiences positively and to feel able to participate. They also often struggle to focus for any length of time and to share space and people/resources without issue. They were so involved and captured by the performance that they all behaved impeccably and their usual problems were put on hold." |
Dance Film |
Barrowland Ballet has had continued international success with its repertoire of dance films, garnering several laurels from established film festivals across 22-23. Across the year our films have been officially selected and featured at Springdance Film Festival, Barcelona; Utah Dance Film Festival; Knowbox Dance Film Festival; CineVox Dance Film Festival; Uptilt Film Festival; R.E.D International Film Festival; Gathered Together Festival; On Art Dance and Music Film Festival; Inspired Dance Youth Film Festival; Cinecorps Rennes; Exeter Film Festival; Vienna Film Festival; Cinedanza Film Festival; SF3 Smartphone Fest; Edinburgh Short Film Festival; African Smartphone International Film Festival. The company's film portfolio is demonstrating an ability to reach new audiences, develop Barrowland Ballet's profile internationally and to generate a modest income within a challenging global context. |
Participatory Work |
Wolf Pack intergenerational company continued in 2022-2023, meeting weekly on Tuesday evenings across the year. Working with dance artist Aya Kobayashi, the company created a new dance piece 'Monument' which was performed at Indepen-dance's Gathered Together Festival in July 2022 and again at Barrowland Ballet's showcase event in Traverse T4 in November 2022. They then created a further new piece, 'Guts', which performed at Go Dance March 2023. |
Professional Contemporary Class, co-run with The Work Room, continued with indoor class taking place weekly on Thursday and Friday mornings during term time. This continues to be well attended reaching 657 participants across the year. |

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
For The Year Ended 31 March 2023 |
Barrowland Ballet's Creative Scotland's Youth Arts Access project, initiated in 21-22, was completed in June 2022. The project saw Natasha Gilmore, a team of dance artists, a cinematographer and sound designer work with P4-P7 pupils from St Albert's Primary and three ASN classes each from St Albert's Primary and Isobel Mair School, to create and perform in their own contemporary dance films, inspired by Barrowland Ballet's existing repertoire of films. We were able to engage with 229 young people in the creation of three new films 'Hoods Off', 'The Tea Party' and 'Frames', providing experience in front and behind the screen, introducing choreography, framing and shooting dance for camera. All three films were professionally edited before sharing with the young people and their families with a red-carpet film premiere event at St Albert's Primary School and a screening celebration for pupils at Isobel Mair in June 2022. The films were further screened at Barrowland Ballet's showcase event in Traverse T4 in November 2022. |
Barrowland Ballet further worked with St Albert's Primary pupils on a Dance Storytelling Project. Pupils at St Albert's Primary found that they could not identify with any characters in the books they were reading. This project saw the pupils write their own children's stories, working with Scottish BIPOC artists to create the book artwork and publish their work. Taking themes found in the stories, Associate Artist Aya Kobayashi worked with 20 pupils and Tabla player, Sodhi Hardeep, to create a dance piece that was then performed to friends and family. |
Sector Development and Leadership |
Barrowland Ballet are proud to contribute to the local, national and international arts ecology. Artistic Director, Natasha Gilmore, continues to provide formal and informal mentoring to dance artists and choreographers. The Barrowland Ballet team continue to contribute to a number of networks and forums, and throughout the year have been invited to share their practice through talks, panel discussions and masterclasses both within the UK and internationally. |
This year Natasha presented at numerous events including IIAN, Catch the Wave; ASSITEJ Bibu and Hakawy Festival, Egypt on her work for and with young people with complex needs such as autism and her intergenerational practice. She also delivered workshops at NTS's School Teacher day; Hakawy Festival Egypt and Baboro Festival, Ireland. |
Barrowland Ballet and The Work Room's Youth Bursary Programme continued into 2022-23 allowing us to provide two emerging choreographers and dance artists, aged 18 - 24 years with paid time and the wrap-around support from both organisations, to instigate and develop their own creative projects. This concluded in October 2022. |
Throughout the 2022/23 period, Barrowland Ballet has been funded by Creative Scotland's 'Radical Care' programme, to co-design and test the implementation of bespoke 'Care Riders' to support those with caring responsibilities to identify and articulate their needs. The intention is to take an expansive and holistic approach to provision and structures of support, and the investigation will span different roles and context. It is hoped that sharing the process and impact of Care Riders with the wider sector will help to normalise these requirements and this provision. This project will accelerate Barrowland Ballet's existing work in addressing barriers for caregivers, with a strong focus on mothers and single parent families |
FINANCIAL REVIEW |
Financial position |
Barrowland Ballet's financial model has relied on a combination of funding and earned income. Earned income has been obtained through commissions of new work, co-productions, performances, screenings and participatory engagement work. |
Funding is sought from a variety of sources. Since 2015 Barrowland Ballet has been in receipt of regular funding from Creative Scotland, with a current funding award in place until 31 March 2024. The funding from Creative Scotland is used to support the charity to seek match funding from Trusts and Foundations such as The National Lottery Community Fund, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and The Roberson Trust. With secure long-term Creative Scotland funding for the period April 2018 - March 2024 the charity aims to use this leverage to diversify its funding base further, ensuring its ongoing financial resilience. Creative Scotland considers any core funding provided under this agreement to be unrestricted for the purposes of classification under the requirements of the SORP for Charities. |
It is recognized that Barrowland Ballet currently have a larger amount of funds than is normal for the organisation. This is predominantly due to the budget for a number of activities being held and allocated for postponed/ future delivery for projects across 2022-24. This includes the significant funding in place for the British Council International Collaboration Funding for Poggle together with the unanticipated, but much required, recovery funding received. |

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |

FINANCIAL REVIEW |
Reserves policy |
The company will maintain charity reserves to a level that would support a minimum of three months, and ideally six months of staff and office running costs. This is to allow either the sufficient continuation of operations following any unexpected shortfall in revenue, provide resources for any unexpected opportunities, provide sufficient working capital to assist in day to day fluctuations in cashflow or, if necessary, time to allow the company to be wound up. |
Reserves should be reviewed annually. |
Reserves achieved beyond the figure necessary to support six months of activity will be invested back into the company's programme of activity. |
FUTURE PLANS |
Following a halt to production in 2020 due to the pandemic restrictions, 'Too Close to the Sun' (originally called 'Learning to Fly'), our work for young people co-commissioned by Imaginate, is now scheduled for completion in Spring 2023 with a short Scottish tour including presentation at Edinburgh International Children's Festival in June 2023. |
Barrowland Ballet's existing work continues to receive ongoing interest for further national and international touring. It is our intention to engage with a producer on a part-time basis who will support the planning of our onward touring and international portfolio of work. There is significant interest in 'Playful Tiger' together with 'Tiger Tale' and 'Tiger', both due to a large amount of tour booking being postponed due to the pandemic in 2020 together with new interest. 'Family Portrait' has also received significant interest since it's premier and looks to continue to build a strong national and international presence. |
In December 21 it was confirmed that Barrowland Ballet, together with artistic collaborators Atta Festival, Turkey, had been successful in its application to the British Council International Collaboration Fund. We have been awarded £65,483 to collaborate in the creation of an adapted version of 'Poggle' for young children with complex needs such as autism. The project will involve a cast in the UK and one in Turkey, with the work due to commence in August 2023, Turkish premiere in September 2023 and Scottish premiere in February 2024. |
'The Gift', developed in Winter 2021 through a co-commission with Eden Court Theatre, Aberdeen Performing Arts, and Capital Theatre, along with adaptation 'The Unexpected Gift' will be presented at the third and final commissioning venue, The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen in December 2023. The Citizen's Theatre has since registered interest in a Christmas run for 2024. |
