Since May 2022 Devon Ukrainian Association provided essential services to newly arrived Ukrainian families to have full access to support that enabled social integrations in the local area and educational, cultural, and social connections. We provided guidance and signposting to new arrivals in taking the first steps in establishing their life in the UK, both in person and by administering our dedicated digital platforms, such as WhatsApp chat, Mighty Networks platform, Telegram channel, Facebook page, and Instagram profile. We also have a website www.dua.org.ukTo provide in-person support we run an initiative called Conversation Cafe for Ukraine, which serves as a welcome hub. It had over 6,000 visits (local residents and Ukrainian people) in total since it opened, and in the first year, we had close to 2,000 (many repeat) visits from the Ukrainian community. In July-October, 2022 we had 60+ visits a day on average and we provided visitors with emotional support, advice, signposting, Citizens Advice consultations, and career pathway mentoring. We fostered a culture of welcome and safety for those who are seeking sanctuary from war, including provisional support to address trauma and/or grief. We also produced large community events - Independence Day at Poltimore House (400 people attended), Family Christmas, 24 February Vigil for Ukraine (300+ people participated), With (Y)our own Eyes, exhibition of frontline photographers (over 600 people visited), Ukrainian Easter Service at Exeter Cathedral (500 people), Vyshhivanka Day (May), along with other 62 (masterclasses, excursions, events that we either produced or participated in. We organised concert tours across Devon of a Ukrainian performance company called Word and Voice from Lviv to share Ukrainian cultural singing traditions (10 concerts in total) and raise awareness of the current situation in Ukraine. We provided maximum exposure to social interaction with local groups that promoted further integration and independence (St Sidwell Community Centre and Bakery, Exeter Phoenix, Respect Festival, Refugee Support Devon, Inclusive Exeter, Wellbeing Exeter community builders, etc.) Details can be found in our reports on our website.We have also supported professional development and establishment of self-employment pathways for beauty service specialists (5 people in total) and created for people interested in catering or hospitality business.We have grown considerably in our first year in terms of our output, our outreach, and our ambition, thanks to our close working relationship with Exeter City Council and Devon County Council, and numerous other stakeholders and supporters.
The company’s stakeholders are recently arrived people from Ukraine, their UK hosts, and everyone who is interested and wants to support Ukrainian culture and history dissemination. We regularly conduct surveys to take stock of the changing needs. People also are encouraged to email us their suggestions or proposals for initiatives. We have a very active WhatsApp chat that by May 2023 had close to 600 subscribers, not counting their family members and children. It informs us daily of the needs of our community. In July 2022 we held asset-based community development meeting which raised several important themes for our initiatives: educational pathways, psychological support, and wellbeing signpostings. Based on the data gathered we provided psychological support to various age groups to deal with trauma, adjustments to new culture and environment, and to build stronger connections between community members. We also started to provide yoga classes every week, we hired a consultant to provide one-on-one sessions for career and education pathways.We regularly collaborate with local educational institutions, such as schools, colleges, and Universities. In autumn 2022, we collaborated with the University of Exeter's MA Creativity: Innovation and Business Strategy programme to conduct in-depth research through interviews around such topics as food/cuisine/gastronomy. The research provided insights in community's need to gain access to community kitchens and to create gastronomy-based events around traditional Ukrainian holidays. Having worked closely with St Sidwell community bakery and kitchen, we created a number of exciting opportunities for our community to share their traditions (i.e. teaching masterclasses to British hosts on making special Easte Bread, decorating Christmas cookies, etc.)
The total amount paid to two part-time executive directors in respect of qualifying services, such as day-to-day operations and management, was £21,502.44. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
