Principal activities1) Skate Haven CIC has run 40 free-of-cost, fully provisioned group skateboarding sessions with a cohort of young people (9 in total; 100% of whom have at least one registered disability, and 100% of whom are registered for free school meals) who are service users at a local mentoring service (Step Out Mentoring, Camberwell)2) Skate Haven CIC has organised 10 free-of-cost, fully provisioned group trips to skateparks across London with a cohort of young people (14 in total; most of whom have at least one registered disability and are registered for free school meals) who are service users at a local mentoring service (Step Out Mentoring, Camberwell).3) Skate Haven CIC has facilitated 5 free-of-cost, fully provisioned larger group (10-15 participants) ‘open introductory’ skate sessions with young people (67 in total) registered at, or affiliated with, Step Out Mentoring in public spaces. Activities ImpactSkate Haven CIC dedicates itself to high-quality, safe skate sessions that aim to empower students in a number of ways:A) Skate Haven CIC is partnered with Concrete Jungle Foundation via the Edu-Skate Worldwide Network. This denotes a commitment to providing skate sessions that foster the development of a number of essential life skills. The Edu-Skate framework is research-based, drawing from the established psychological theory of Self-Determination.B) Skate Haven CIC is undergoing planning to facilitate research in social-skateboarding through its involvement in a master's dissertation at UCL (in the Creative Health MASc), due September 2024.C) Skate Haven CIC promotes a high level of coach training and qualification. Coach training standards currently include, but are not limited to: full certification by Skateboard GB, including public liability insurance, emergency first-aid training, regular DBS checks and child safeguarding training, mental health first-aid training, mentorship training, and Edu-Skate training. All Skate Haven sessions have at least one fully qualified coach on site.
1) The primary stakeholders of the CIC are the young people, as well as their primary caregivers, registered at Step Out who partake in the weekly skate sessions. Young people consulted on a weekly basis in pre- and post-session feedback discussions. Session planning is highly flexible and co-produced together with participants. We also get valuable feedback from our participants' parents, who we interact with on a weekly basis.2) We work closely with the staff at Step Out Mentoring to ensure that we adhere to their strict codes of conduct. Session plans are frequently discussed with Step Out staff. They provide consultation on service users' needs, preferences, availabilities etc., as well as aid in logistics such as location, timing, and transport.3) Concrete Jungle Foundation are secondary stakeholder through our Edu-Skate partnership. We log sessions onto Concrete Jungle Foundation's online registry of Edu-Skate sessions worldwide and provide images and videos of session activities. In return, Concrete Jungle Foundation organise online seminars for all the partners to discuss their own programmes and activities. Concrete Jungle Foundation and the Edu-Skate Worldwide Network are seeking joint funding.
