The Autistic Adult Choir (TAAC) was formed in September 2015. It is believed to be the first of its kind in the world. It is open for all ASC individuals and their parents and / or carers over the age of 18. TAAC totalled five members at launch and has since grown to nearly 50 members throughout all the four countries of the UK. There are between 20 and 30 members who like to perform in public settings with the group.TAAC members also represent the face of autism to their respective communities throughout the UK. Members live in various communities throughout the UK from as far west as Wales, the South West to Bristol, across the South Coast, Berkshire, east to Cambridge and north to Sheffield.Throughout the past year, we participated in community events that were part of Camden Council initiatives such as ‘Make Camden Great Again’, Race & Equality Foundation, BASWA film, Camdenist Christmas Concert at Regent’s Canal. In addition, we supported charities such as the Sean O’Brian Charity by participating in their annual Christmas Carol Concert and Autism London Area Group (ALAG) and the Stuart Low Trust by singing in their Christmas events. We also participated in the annual Music Festival hosted by Prior’s Court School which included other local groups in Newbury/Reading. TAAC’s participation in each of the above was to help educate the public about autism and how it can be channelled into something positive such as music that benefits not only TAAC’s members but also the community.
In every activity in which TAAC is asked to participate, stakeholders are always consulted. TAAC is designed to be a ‘user led’ group meaning that the autistic members are always consulted prior to confirming any bookings. In addition, stakeholders who are consulted are those either autistic or leaders in autism work such as faculty from New York University and Adelphi University. Stakeholders also include autistic individuals in the corporate roles who have a particular interest in TAAC and provide advice both on governance, PR, and potential concerts in which we are asked to participate.TAAC is keen to keep the well-being of its members at the core of what we do, making certain they are always looked after, and safeguarding is in place, so they never feel exploited.
