The News Literacy Network is dedicated to empowering young people by equipping them with essential skills to navigate the news in today’s world. NLN believes that news literacy is not only an essential life skill, but a powerful catalyst for positive change. Our education program does more than just treat the symptoms of a polluted information environment: it empowers individuals to actively participate in shaping a healthier information ecosystem and advocates for systemic actin to address the root causes of harmful and misleading information. With a strong focus on solutions journalism and mental health, NLN’s mission is to leverage the power of news literacy to enhance our individual and collective wellbeing. This year we have created a pilot curriculum and delivered the program to two schools in South East London. We are working with two universities (Liverpool and UEL) to create an impact evaluation report which will be available from September. Once this is complete, the curriculum will be available for other schools to us.
The stakeholders are students, teachers/educators and policy makers. We have consulted students by delivering a pilot program to them and gathering their feedback through pre and post surveys/ we have also gathered qualitative data through focus groups. The teachers have been a part of this investigation too so that we make sure what we are creating is compatible with those who will be delivering it. With regards to policy, we have shared our work with key education ministers to elevate the importance of news literacy at a national level.
