Disabled Students UK is a grassroots organisation working strategically for increased accessibility in Higher Education. DSUK’s 2022 report Going Back is Not a Choice brings together the voices of over 300 disabled students and presents key accessibility lessons from the pandemic. The report has been hailed as “both seminal and a potential game changer in its review of UK HE inclusive provision” and the launch was attended by over 100 university staff members. 92% found the content helpful for improving the situation for disabled students in Higher Education. In 2022 DSUK also conducted research into the experiences of disabled PhD students and set up the Access Insights project, aiming to provide the Higher Education sector with concrete steps that institutions can take to be more accessible and inclusive going forward. The organisation provided public speaking and training services, championed the disabled student perspective at a number of university and policy events and platformed disabled student voices in social media. DSUK was recognised by Shaw Trust as one of the most influential disabled led organisations in the UK.
In 2022 DSUK was the biggest disabled student-led organisation in the UK, with disabled student contributors from 70 different universities. The organisation is made up of disabled people at every level of leadership and is continually asking for input from the over 500 disabled student members of our Facebook working group about the direction of the organisation.
