Bethesda Community Care (BCC) is a non-profit community interest Company established in December 2020, based in Wembley and operates in London and Greater London. Our mission is to support the vulnerable in the community and parents and carers of children with special needs and disabilities. In May 2022 we had a coffee morning for the Brent Community who were feeling isolated and lonely coming out of COVID lockdown. It was called Sharing is Caring and we had a speaker to come and share her story about resilience and bouncing back from low mood and depression. The aim was to help those in the community who were feeling isolated and did not have anywhere to go and wanted to meet people just to have a connection with the community. There were well-being gifts and also in the bag was a laminated leaflet with the details of services for mental health such as Samaritan and Brent talking therapies. The attendees came from all over Brent NW10, HA9, NW2 HA0 and NW. The age range of the attendees was mixed from working age to pensioners. The people who attended the coffee morning came from a variety of backgrounds, such as Asian, Black Caribbean and African and White British and Romanian. Through our local networking and publicity, we were able to attract 23 people to the coffee mornings. In August we received a grant to fund an Art Therapy workshop for children with an EHC plan or SEN Support. We started with KS4 children and out of the Art therapy workshop the children grew in confidence and through it, BCC was able to support a part whose child was self-harming. The children felt valued and enjoyed the time when they could freely express themselves and in the end, gave them confidence and enhanced their well-being. This project is still going on through KS3 and KS2 children. Other services:1) Community Engagement, co-production and information sharing with professionals2) Helping out at Mental Health events.Well-being and social events3) Attending workshops about Sustainability so as to share with the community.4) Resources on Mental Health and Special educational needs services.
Our main stakeholders are:1) Parents and carers of children with special needs.2) Young People with SEND3) People with low Mental health symptoms4) Brent Health Matters5) Health Watch6) Metropolitan and Thames Valley Housing AssociationWe consulted with the Parents and carers of children with special educational needs on a WhatsApp group and with Brent Parent Care Forum. The parents said that there was not much in the community for their children to attend because activities were not tailored for children with additional needs. The feedback from the mental well-being community was that they wanted more coffee mornings as the one in May was encouraging and uplifting and had information on where to get mental health services. The parents were grateful for the art therapy workshop, which helped the children to verbalise their feelings and how to manage society. Our extensive outreach and networking activities continue to allow us to be representative to a wide range of communities and instrumental in consultations for mental health activities.
