Withington Public Hall Institute is now re-embedded in the community as an inclusive venue where all are welcome. The company strive to ensure the history of the building is recognised and respected, and given that it was previously a men-only members club for approximately 60 years, are delighted that everyone in the community can now visitThe core activities are based around hospitality services, especially the provision of locally sourced, independently produced food and drink. Working in partnership with local residents and other like-minded businesses has helped to create an inclusive events programme which is driven by the local community. Highlights include:Women only ChoirPoetry, music and spoken word eventsCelebrations for local community groups including local pensioners and toddlers/parentsMindful, informal social art classesLGBTQ+ eventsLicensed premises training sessions in partnership with MCC Charity fundraisers for local and national organisations including The Christie, Maggies and MacMillan Our approach to recruitment offers opportunities to young and inexperienced local residents, including those with other perceived barriers to employment. Many of the company’s employees and volunteers identify as being neurodiverse, and all have benefited from gaining practical experience in a supportive environment.
All local residents and visitors to Withington ‘village’ are stakeholders in the company and, as local residents themselves, the directors and employees are in constant, informal dialogue with this group. More formal consultation with specific stakeholders is achieved by engaging with recognised groups and organisations such as:Withington Civic SocietyWithington Village Regeneration PartnershipLocal school’s PTA (Parent Teacher Associations) Withington AssistLocal CouncillorsManchester City Council Neighbourhoods ServicesManchester Students GroupThe over-riding feedback from these informal and formal consultations is an ambition for the company to be able to “do more of the same”. A limiting factor is the current operational hours, which is driven in the main by finite operational resources and a conservative premises licence. The company aims to address these issues in 2023.More specific feedback emphasised the need to ensure the product choice reflected the diversity and needs of the local community. The company’s response included developing and sourcing specific products including:Vegan and Gluten-free food optionsBudget drinksLow and non-alcoholic drinks
