The company runs Withington Public Hall Institute as a contemporary Social Enterprise for the benefit of the local community, with a core commercial offer of hospitality services, specialising in locally-sourced produce. Opening during the pandemic in Autumn 2020 created significant challenges, however activities at WPHI have benefitted the community in a number of ways, including:-Re-opening a historic community venue in the heart of Withington ‘village’ for the benefit of all local residents; a marked shift from the previous, exclusive operation which was a men-only, members club.-Sourcing all beverages direct from local producers, adding value to the local craft-cased economy.-Working in partnership with local food traders to encourage entrepreneurship.-Creating jobs for local young people, disadvantaged by age or lack of experience.-Providing an appropriate venue for local community organisations and charities to offer bespoke events, such as:-Food and diet based holiday programmes for local Primary school-age children-Safe and accessible, women-only leisure activities-Informal, practical Mental health discussion groups/workshops-Training and development-Fundraising and promotional activities
The company’s stakeholders are local residents and visitors to Withington ‘village’, and as local residents themselves, the directors are in constant dialogue with the local community. Informal networking of this type has facilitated numerous introductions to other like-minded people and organisations, ultimately encouraging on-going feedback and partnership work. The company has also engaged with other, appropriate local organisations for more consultation, for example attending and participating in Annual General Meetings. These organisations include, but are not exclusive to:-Withington Civic Society-Withington Village Regeneration Partnership-Local school’s PTA (Parent Teacher Associations) -Manchester City Council Neighbourhoods Services
