In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community. Kirbabil Community Interest Company, having registered a subsidiary company in Sudan in April 2022, were limited or unable to continue with planned activities, which were started during the year, due to the current ongoing war in the country. The company has, however, established a working relationship with a community in villages surrounding of Namokora and Orom towns in the northern district of Kitgum of Uganda, East Africa. The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Waren 3rd Generation Company Ltd., registered in Kampala, entering into trade partnership (70% to 30% respectively) to produce and trade in sesame crop this season (June – December 2023) as a trial, with the aim of raising funds and partnering with the community to engage in the farming of sesame in larger community farmland in the coming season; and exploring marketing of sesame as a cash crop, in the regional and export to European markets, to, consequently, support the livelihoods of the community in the Kitgum district of Northern Uganda. The chairman of Kirbabil Community Interest Company and a representative from Waren 3rd Generation organized visits to the targeted community and held several meetings with a ten-member executive committee, representing the Ribebe farmers group in the village of LABUYIN. The outcome of the meetings were the followingAn agreement was reached with the executive committee, after his consultation with the Ribabe farmer group, to provide 38 acres of farmland to Waren 3rd Generation Co. Ltd as the implementing party in the business partnership with Kirbabil-CIC. The payment was made for 38 acres of farmland by Waren 3rd Generation and the activity of handing over the farmland was completed, and clearing land commenced. This will be followed by ox ploughing, sesame cultivation, and weeding. The sesame crop is expected to be harvested in October- November 2023A baseline survey is underway to try to determine the norms of sesame cultivation, as a cash crop in the Labuyin area, identify challenges faced by farmers and draw a plan to address any challenges to enable the community to improve sesame production and marketing, and improve the social and economic situation through utilizing more farmland for producing & processing sesame, as well as promote marketing and hence the value of traded sesame crops. It is anticipated that a sizable number of the community (1020 direct community members) would immediately benefit from the hiring of community farmland by the company, and gain income from employment opportunities in the various activities of the Sesame scheme (such as farm clearing, use of local oxploughing, harvesting as well selling some of their own produce of sesame at more competitive prices to Waren 3rd Generation Company.
Kirbabil’s stakeholders are, in general, the community in villages surrounding Namokora and Orom towns in the northern district of Kitgum in Uganda.
