Batala Mersey is a samba reggae drum band with its roots/origins in afro Caribbean music. We are based in Central Liverpool and we are part of a wider family of sister bands all across the globe numbering 48 in total at the last count. At a local level we recruit and encourage from our local community no matter what race, religion, gender etc. etc. We encourage the local community by assisting people to join by having subsidised fees for those on income support or low incomes. We provide instruments and costumes to further aid and encourage members from all levels of our society. We try to give back to our community by providing free gigs to charities as well as raising funds for an annually chosen local charity. We will also put on fundraising events/parades to raise funds for international disasters. As a part of a larger family of bands, we support members from those bands to come and play with us and learn about our communities, and vice versa. Our members are helped and facilitated by the wider world family that then enables international travel that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. For the year 2022/23 we played charity events and we recruited new members. We supported members visiting sister bands at several international events. We supported 4 members gaining a first aid qualification that was a transferable skill in the wider community and a possible aid to employment.
