During the Financial Year 2021 - 2022 (1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022), REGA- UK continued to incorporate cultural content into the celebrations and events it organised. The aim of these events has been to continue to represent the Galician language and culture in the country. The following events were organised during the financial year:Galician Literature Day 2021 (As letras de Xela)15th May 2021Virtual eventThe 2021 Galician Literature Day was dedicated to the writer, editor, translator, poet, and teacher Xela Arias. To commemorate her life and work, REGA-UK organised a virtual event which took place via REGA’s Facebook page.In years before the pandemic, this event had been organised at a London venue and had been well attended by the Galician community. However, due to the restrictions still in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this event was a virtual one.During the week leading up to the event, several announcements were published on REGA-UK’s social networks.Seventeen, London-born Galician children from Troula, lent us their voices and drawings to give life to a witch tale that Xela Arias invented when she was 11 years old. Troula is a Galician-speaking playgroup. The group was set up a few years ago by a few London families with Galician backgrounds who got together few years ago to organise sessions where children could play, learn, and socialise in Galician. We interviewed the musician Fernando Abreu to talk about the experimental side of Xela Arias, how they both collaborated in several recitals and how the writer longed to take literature to the streets and show it to the public in a dialogue with other arts. With the push of Galician Literature Day, Abreu took up the project they had left unfinished in 2003: "Intemperiome" is now a music CD that accompanies the reissue of Xela Arias' last poetry book and a multimedia show that Abreu et al. toured through different cities of Galicia during 2021.With Beatriz Pereira, director of the documentary "Xela Arias. Poet on the Margins", we talked about the relevance of Arias in Galician literature as an editor, translator, and poet; of its social commitment and how little known she was to many before the Galician Literature Day tribute. We organised a contest with questions related to the life and work of Xela Arias among the viewers of our event. The winner took home a bottle of Galician gin. With the permission of A banda da Loba (a well-known Galician band), we played their music video "Intemperiome" to end the event. This song is part of the album "Hasme oir", which is inspired by the poetry of Xela Arias.Xuntanza by the Thames (Gathering by the Thames)26th September 2021Jubilee Gardens, Southbank, LondonThe event “Xuntanza by the Thames” marked the return to face-to-face events for REGA-UK since the start of the Covid 19 Pandemic. This event aimed to gather the Galician community in a picnic-foliada in Jubilee Gardens, next to the river Thames."Foliada", is a term used to refer to parties where traditional Galician tunes are sung and played. Foliadas tend to take place at neighborhood meetings, popular festivals and nights around the fire singing and dancing to the rhythm of bagpipes, tambourines, and a variety of instruments. This event was a fantastic opportunity for the Galician community to reconnect after a long period of absence from face-to-face events. It was also an opportunity to meet fellow Galicians who arrived during the pandemic and had been following us on our social networks. One of them, the musicologist Xavi Castanha, enlivened the event by playing the tambourine and singing and gave an impromptu traditional Galician dance class.Xantar de Magosto (“Magosto” lunch)20th November 2021Casa Madeira Restaurant, Vauxhall, LondonFollowing the relaxation of the Covid measures in the country, REGA-UK organised a lunch at a Portuguese restaurant in London to celebrate the “magosto”.The “magosto” was originally a harvest celebration that Galicians held around a fire to roast chestnuts. On the cold nights of early November, a fire inspired people to tell stories and old legends. Nowadays, it is common around Galicia, for groups of friends and neighbors to host nighttime “magostos” with bonfires, chestnuts, cooked chorizo and "new" wine. No celebration would be complete without music, thus, traditional tunes are typically played during "magostos".We were not able to host a bonfire, however, we ensured that the chestnuts were present during the event! The event was sold out and Galicians and attendees from other nationalities celebrated the Magosto with a chestnut flan made by one of the members of the REGA-UK committee. At the end of the lunch, a bottle of coffee liqueur was drawn among all attendees.Entroido 2022 (Carnival 2022)26th February 2022Pico Bar & Grill, Vauxhall, LondonThe 2022 Carnival celebration took place on Saturday 26th February, at the Pico Bar & Grill in Vauxhall, London. In addition to the lunch where typical Galician Carnival sweets were tasted (“filloas”, “flores”, and “orellas”) the event included a costume contest in which children and adults participated.During the event, a homemade empanada was raffled among all attendees.
