In the last year, Chayn created more online resources to support survivors of gender-based violence. We also translated more of our resources into languages such as Spanish, Arabic, and Urdu. We launched Soul Medicine, a micro-course platform that allows survivors of abuse to browse online or sign-up to receive them via customised, and safe email messages. Broken down into bite-size pieces, each pathway is easy to follow and intended to help survivors on their journey to recovery. We also improved the service provided by our chat bot – Little Window, a smart search bot that quickly directs Chayn.co visitors to our site’s most relevant information. We began research for building a new digital service for survivors of sexual assault. From detecting abuse through reporting, trial, and ongoing aftercare, it would compile vetted information to help survivors during their personal journeys. In 2019, across all projects we had more than 45000 web sessions, serving 41,000 unique visitors and garnering 100 000 page views. Our work creates the following change:Informs survivors so they can identify abuse as something that is not their fault, and are able to make informed decisions about their welfareConnects survivors to information, advice and local organisationsSupports friends and family to support survivorsProvide replicable models and free resources to frontline organisations
We work with a “build with, not for” principle which means our main stakeholders – survivors of abuse – are part of our team. We also conducted an extensive research with domestic abuse survivors in shelters, and through social media surveys. We heard from survivors that what they were missing was a space to explore options outside of legal justice, and therefore, we planned and started building more resources to do with self-confidence, trauma recovery and managing stress.
