During this financial year, we continued to support young people in the Ashbrow area by acting on the key areas of concern derived from the consultation in the previous year. We continued to run our fitness sessions in line with the NYA (National Youth Agency) and government guidelines. We have provided another summer holiday programme, Schools Out, and continued to support young people to access digital devices and support. Our YKA 'Young Kings Academy' mentoring programme was launched. A youth crime prevention initiative that works with children and young people aged 8-12 & 13- 19 years old who are at risk of offending, anti-social behaviour (including gang-related activity) and school exclusion. Kirklees Council funded the pilot project to work specifically with young people from the BAC (Black African/Caribbean Community), including those of dual heritage. We recruited eight culturally-sensitive mentors to support young people by providing 'one-to-one' support and group work activities that build their self-esteem, raise their aspirations, and ultimately assist them in finding alternative positive choices. The eight Mentors undertook an L3 training course titled "Trauma-Informed Mentoring for Young People". The course was delivered to upskill and provide mentors with the knowledge and skills required to support the cohort referred to the organisation. We were successfully awarded funding from the National Lottery under the Leaders with Lived Experience initiative to run Young Peoples Leadership Programme and have recruited a programme coordinator to support its delivery. We have partnered with organisations to include an accredited qualification for our beneficiaries. Awarded by the (ILM) Institute of Leadership and Management, this programme is for individuals aged 14 to 19 years. The aim is to help young people develop a range of skills and behaviours, including self-awareness, self-management, leadership skills and mentoring. Each participant will be matched with a mentor to support them in their leadership journey and will have the opportunity to work on a social action project in their local community. The Social Action Project will be youth-led and enable young people to address key important issues and support their community's recovery from the effects of the pandemic.
Our stakeholders continue to be young people and their families, other community leaders' local schools, the local authority, organisations that support young people in the Kirklees area and members of the community themselves. We used a range of tools, including surveys, polls and feedback during initial assessments, to help shape our Positive Stepz In2 Manhood intuitive (YKA mentoring programme) and our Leadership Programme to ensure the workshops are relevant and appropriate to the needs of young people. We also supported a piece of research commissioned by C&K Careers, who are our primary careers service for young people in the Kirklees area.C&K Careers wanted to understand the aspirations, goals, challenges and experiences of the Black African and Caribbean (BAC) and Mixed Heritage BAC cohorts to ensure that their lived experience helped shape the service provided in a co-productive way. We supported this research by conducting one of the four focus groups and submitted our findings to contribute to the final report produced by COSMOS Ltd. We also used the results from this research to develop further our leadership programme to incorporate additional employability sessions and look at providing industry visits to our participants.
