Positive Stepz C.I.C Co Reg: 11553999Accounting Report Financial Year 2018 - 2019 PART 1 - GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANYS ACTIVITIES AND IMPACTPositive Stepz aims and objectives are to support young people from disadvantaged areas with a particular focus on supporting young people from BAME communities. During the financial year of 2018 - 2019, the activities have benefited the community and young people byEngaging with over 300 young people through various channels, established ourselves as a new youth provider within the Kirklees area. Reopening Bradley Youth Club Young people aged 8 - 12 from areas of high deprivation have been able to meet every week to socialise, learn new skills and engage in issue-based workshops and lead on discussions they felt were relevant to them. Bradley youth club have provided a safe, informal learning environment for young people that live in the Ash Brow ward. The provision opened following consultations with young people in the local primary school in Bradley.Healthy Holidays 2019With the support and coordination from KYA Kirklees Youth Alliance, Positive Stepz ran the targeted Schools Out Healthy Holidays provision in Bradley located in the AshBrow Ward. Over the last few years, holiday hunger has become a considerable concern, according to the Governments 2017 APPG Hungry Holidays report. Research has shown that in long holiday breaks as well as going hungry, some childrens learning and behaviour also go backwards.Positive Stepz staff worked closely with the local primary schools to supply a targeted provision for those young people who would benefit the most. Families with FSM eligibility and involvement with social care services were given priority allocation of places. The four-week programme was delivered using the 4x4 model (4 hours 4 days and week for four weeks). We combined a range of activities that included outdoor learning, sports sessions delivered by partner organisations, nutritional education activities, arts and crafts and team-building games. We also ran a two-day enterprise workshop delivered by an external provider, and ran trips out to Bolton Abbey and Tag X. Over the four weeks weDelivered 68 Hours of Provision Served 416 meals to young people over the four weeks The two-day enterprise challenge is being further developed with local partners to enable us to reach more young people across Kirklees. We also provided the opportunity for our young people to speak at a conference that was held at the University of Huddersfield to recite literature during Black History Month.
Consultations are fundamental to everything we do, and we have conducted four this year with our stakeholders. To begin our initial work this year and develop the services, we plan to go on and deliver next year. The youth club was formed of the back of two consultations one with young people in the local primary school in Bradley. Young Peoples Housing Consultation Positive Stepz was commissioned by KNH to conduct a consultation with young people, with a particular focus on those with additional needs or had failed tenancy to support the development of the young peoples' pathway model. Following conversations with KNH staff, that highlighted a disproportionate number of young people were failing to sustain their tenancy past 12 months. The consultation set out to explore the views of young people aged 15-25 and obtain opinions and experiences from a diverse group that would also include those with complex needs. KNH expressed they wanted to develop a suitable pathways model that was fit for purpose to support current and potential new young tenants. To achieve this, we explored several concerns that could be vigorously linked to young people, and their tenancy and a mixed-method approach was employed that included;-A paper-based questionnaire.-A revised questionnaire in digital format. -A focus group to allow us to explore the views in more depth, facilitated by two youth workers and a school mentor supported by KNH housing officers.-Finally, four case studies from young people with more complex needs; three care leavers one of which was subject to ISS (Intensive Supervision & Surveillance) YOT (Youth Offending Team) order and one that had a previously failed tenancy and subjected to CSE. These were produced by practitioners who were directly working closely to support them at the time. We concluded from our research and discussed that one size does not fit all when it comes to supporting young people in housing, and young people need a bespoke service. Young tenants will come from a range of socio-economic backgrounds have different levels of resilience and enter into the tenancy with varying degrees of support. However, we were able to identify initiatives that would both support young people and the needs of KNH as a business simultaneously. Collectively we gained the views of young people successfully and were informed these recommendations were included in a more extensive report that was put to KNH SLT to support the development of the Young Peoples' Pathways Model. Also, a result of this piece of work, Positive Stepz has used the research and partnered with another social enterprise to look at supporting young people to understand the financial implications and how to budget when entering into their own tenancy. Consultations are a vital activity that shapes the work we do, and we will continue to consult with our young people and all relevant stakeholders to increase the engagement and social impact we will have going forward.
