Rare Species CIC Company report 2020-21Rare Species CIC is a theatre company formed to provide comic theatrical interventions focused on health and wellbeing outcomes. The company has developed a unique fitness class “Mojo Moves” which combines comedy with an authentic aerobic workout to improve physical and mental health amongst its participants. It is led by larger-than-life characters Cheryl Sprinkler & Tony DiMonte aka performers Ginny Adams (Full Time) & Neil Fowler (Part Time). “Mojo Moves” has developed into its own sub-brand with website www.mojomoves.co.uk. Classes moved online in March 2020 with the company investing in IT to be able to deliver their service through lockdown. The company was due to perform a highly popular comic walking tour of their home town Frome in Somerset “Frome. The Fecund Coming.” , However without sufficient solution to rules on social distancing, the plan was cancelled.During the third year of trading, the Company continued to run regular weekly exercise classes online and introduced subscriptions to a series of HIIT classes. They also ran online events and through grants from Somerset Community Foundation and The National Lottery Coronavirus Support Fund were able to deliver specialist seated workouts for adults with long term health conditions such as MS, and weekly discos for young people and children with SEND.As a sideline to their work, they also created a Facebook Group called “Dress up Fridays” which encouraged people to dress up while going about their daily activity (such as going to the supermarket) through the second lockdown and numbers quickly grew to around 800 people. This community spirit & good humour won them a Special Recognition Award from the High Sheriff of Somerset. Most of the face to face work remained shut down although we did run a series of outdoor sessions in the grounds of local venue Cooper Hall - being supported by the Cooper Hall Foundation. These proved quite popular but was only ever a short term project. Other in person classes proved tricky to fill as clients were nervous about returning to “the new normal”. A good relationship with Frome Town Council continues and means that the company has freedom to host outdoor classes in any of the open spaces in the town of which there are many and varied (Parks, meadows, woods). The Company remained buoyant through a difficult and challenging year, adapting quickly to change and providing the community with a place to support their mental & Physical health and bring happiness, fun and respite when people needed it most.
