Basis of measurement and preparation
Notional Theatre CIC is a small theatre-production company.* The Company was formally constituted in April 2018 as it intended applying for Arts Council of Wales (ACW) funding for a specific project (ACW regulations had changed since we last applied for funding).* During the financial year 2018/2019 Notional Theatre created a piece of theatre which was performed at Chapter Arts Centre in December 2018. The intention had been to produce the piece earlier in the year but delays in obtaining grant funding and a change of management at Chapter delayed the project.* The piece ran for three nights (total of four performances), attracted an audience of 107 overall and was critically acclaimed. Had we not had to change the original production date the performances would have taken place before the lead-in to Christmas when there would have been fewer attractions aimed at our potential audience membersNine individuals were engaged on a self-employed basis for the project as well as Notional Theatre CIC's Artistic Director, Terry Victor and Administrative Director, Liz Gardiner. The organisational benefits of the production were primarily skills-based.Our Stage Manager is now proficient in the operation of Q LabOur Actor has benefitted from specialist voice coachingOur first time Creative Producer has had the benefit of learning from a Marketing Consultant, and practical support from Chapter Arts Centre. It is worth noting that we engaged a BSL signer for two performances which attracted members of the deaf community.Original music and film were also created specifically for the project.Notional Theatre CIC would have liked to have toured the production. Unfortunately, touring is an expensive business and it is unlikely that we would have been able to secure further funding. Additionally, the possible dates were not achievable given the late start of the production. An unexpected benefit is found in the raised status of Notional Theatre as a creative force. As well as the above project Notional Theatre CIC toured several performances of "Well Thumbed" - a one-man portmanteau piece of theatre. "Well Thumbed" remains in the repertoire and it is likely that it will continue to be performed in the coming year.Notional Theatre CIC has continued to meet other creatives with a view to working on future projects.
Chapter Arts Centre, our venue partner and ACW (our primary funder) were both keen that any and all advertising material was produced bi-lingually. Notional Theatre CIC were happy to provide this which more than met the organisations' requirements. Re-wired Life, the company that created the "motion picture" environments had a strong ethical policy. Their work brought to life questions surrounding ageing and memory which we were happy to incorporate as one of the production's values. The two other directors of Notional Theatre CIC (neither of whom are directly involved on a day-to-day basis) were fully in accord with the way the production progressed and were consulted both prior to and during the production. Both attended performances and expressed the satisfaction with the way in which the work had developed.Audience feedback confirmed great engagement with CLARISSA! Long post-show conversations with some emotionally affected audience members included the assertion that 'since moving to Cardiff' this was easily the best theatre that had been seen (this was in particular regard to a family member's Alzheimer's). Deaf audience members (at the BSL-signed matinee) were delighted and expressed great engagement with both the story and visuals – as did the signer. It has been interesting to note some differing responses across the age ranges. Older audiences, in particular but not exclusively, enjoyed the details of history and mischievous allusions to famous figures; audiences of middle years seemed most prone to display the emotional impact of the story; younger audiences were engaged with the idea that ‘invisible’ old people have an interesting past but some didn’t see that the narrative gaps (a deliberate artistic decision) were part of the storytelling and a metaphor for diminishing memory.
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £1,200Additionally out-of pocket expenses were also paid to the Artistic Director
