Stories & Supper brings refugees/asylum seekers and local residents together in joint ventures to reduce isolation, counter negative perceptions about migration and build a sense of community and belonging. Our core activities consist of: weekly creative workshops exploring poetry, drama and storytelling; and public facing events such as supper clubs and street food and stories pop-ups. In this financial year we held our creative workshops on Saturday mornings at local community centre Gnome House until the Covid pandemic struck. When lockdowns or other government restrictions made face-to-face meetings impossible, we moved our weekly workshops online and continued to meet virtually every Saturday. It was vital to us that we mitigated some of the worst effects of isolation for the already marginalised communities we work with by staying in regular contact. At the end of 2019, we published a book of recipes and migration stories as part of Waltham Forest's tenure as the first London Borough of Culture, holding a launch event showcasing food and stories from the book to the local community. The publication proved very successful and we sold out our initial print run of 500 copies, reprinting in spring 2020. In this financial year, we continued to collaborate with artists including poet Joelle Taylor, storyteller Jumana Moon and Phosphoros Theatre company. Our creative workshops attracted a growing number of refugees/asylum seekers – numbers which were sustained during the pandemic. Although we were not able to host any further public events during the financial year, as a result of government Covid restrictions, we participated in virtual events, including the Walthamstow Garden Party, Leytonstone Loves Film and Refugee Week. We released a video recording of a group poem written in collaboration with poet Joelle Taylor, as well as publishing a series of cookery videos on YouTube.
