Stories & Supper brings refugees/asylum seekers and local residents in Waltham Forest together in joint ventures to reduce isolation, counter negative perceptions about migration and build a sense of community and belonging. Our core activities consist of weekly creative workshops – exploring poetry, drama and storytelling; weekly allotment visits to our allotment plot; and public facing events such as story cafes, supper clubs and pop-ups at local festivals. Our creative workshops are usually held on Saturday mornings at local community centre Gnome House, but in this financial year our activities were greatly impacted by restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our face to face activities moved online during successive lockdowns, as we continued to meet every week virtually. As in the previous financial year, we knew it was important to alleviate the isolation felt by the already marginalised communities we work with by keeping up regular activities. Our online workshops were well attended and once again we collaborated with TS Elliot prize winning poet Joelle Taylor, Phosphoros Theatre Company and storyteller Jumana Moon. As a result of the output of our creative workshops we secured Arts Council England funding to develop and publish an anthology of poems and stories. We also visited three local secondary schools during Refugee Week 2021, with a team of refugees and volunteers, and led creative writing workshops for students. As restrictions eased we were able to meet in person once more and begin to visit the allotment in groups again. The allotment became a very important place to the group during this year, as a safe outdoors space which boosted wellbeing and reduced stress. We also received funding from City Bridge Trust to run our allotment project for three years. Towards the end of the financial year we took part in the Barbican’s Leytonstone Loves Film festival, screening two of our lockdown films and serving food featuring our allotment produce. The numbers of refugees, asylum seekers and local residents taking part in our activities continued to grow, with around 20 people attending our creative workshops each week, out of a pool of around 40 or 50 people.
