Our CIC, formed in 2017, works with refugees, asylum seekers and local residents in the London Borough of Waltham Forest with the aim of creating a stronger community and a more welcoming society. In 2019, we brought together a larger team of refugees, migrants and local volunteers for regular workshops and public events. We tried a number of innovative approaches to take a more progressive and inclusive narrative about migration to new audiences. It was our busiest year yet, as we held supper club events in Leytonstone and Leyton, ran a story cafe project with Queen Mary University, took part in the first Leytonstone Loves Film event, returned to Walthamstow Garden Party and Canon Frome Court in Herefordshire, and produced a book of recipes and stories as part of the first London Borough of Culture. The global story cafe project had the aim of bringing refugees, migrants and locals together to share stories. The project attracted new local volunteers and refugee/migrant team members into our organisation and a number said that they had been attracted by the chance to learn storytelling skills and make connections with the wider community. The workshops were successful in boosting confidence and breaking down barriers. We shared stories, built friendships and prepared to run a series of story cafes in the community. The story cafes were with 6th Form students at George Monoux College, at Priory Court Community Centre, a women-only cafe and a final cafe at the Migration Museum. The project helped to build our team and brought migration stories to a new audience. We published Stories & Supper: More Than a Recipe Book at the end of the year, incorporating global recipes from refugees, migrants and local volunteers, as well as first-person accounts of migration. The process of creating the book brought people in Waltham Forest together as volunteers, chefs, storytellers, project team, participants and supper guests. It created spaces of welcome and encounter and increased understanding of the reasons why people migrate.
Stories & Supper is a collaboration between refugees, migrants and asylum seekers, local residents and volunteers. These stakeholders are involved in ongoing decisions about the direction of our work.A Steering Committee has been established from financial year 2019-20 with the aim of directing our future plans. The Steering Committee includes stakeholders (refugees, volunteers, local residents and freelance staff) as well as expert and specialist advisors. The Steering Committee will meet between 4 and 6 times a year.
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £7,080.
