Horfield Common CIC is a social enterprise which delivers a wide range of services to the local community in the Horfield Common area of North Bristol. HCCIC runs the Cafe on the Common, a social enterprise and community cafe which is open 7 days a week and functions as a hub for a wide range of additional activity. This is HCCIC’s primary activity. HCCIC employs 27 people on a range of part-time and full-time contracts, and provides regular volunteering opportunities for more than 50 local residents per year in addition to one-off volunteering opportunities annually for hundreds of local residents – of all ages.Staff and volunteers have undertaken a wide range of development and skills training through this financial year, supported by a range of grants from Quartet Community Foundation and WECA.Throughout this accounting period, Horfield Common CIC (HCCIC) has continued to develop it’s socially-enterprising activities, building new partnerships, developing employment opportunities and growing our positive impact for the local and wider community. The Cafe on the Common continues to go from strength to strength as a social enterprise and community business. The Cafe is open 7 days a week, providing a highly visible and fully-accessible community hub space as well as a service for local people. As well as hospitality and food & drink services, the CIC provides affordable space hire, consultancy services, delivers projects which improve the local area and provide opportunities for local people to work together to create positive impact and respond to existing and emerging need in the local area.HCCIC gratefully accepted a grant from the Social Enterprise Support Fund (SESF) which enabled the company to employ a full-time volunteer and events coordinator to support our work to reestablish activities and create new opportunities for local people post-pandemic. This role enabled HCCIC to develop our work with volunteers, creating new models for engagement including events, arts and crafts and site maintenance volunteering. Additionally, the resource enabled us to develop and deliver a programme of events through Summer 2022 which enabled members of our local community to come together and to share experiences, participate in activities and develop new relationships following a period of time when it had not been possible to meet in person.HCCIC were also the grateful recipients of Coop Community Funding to enable us to further develop our play offer for children and young people. This resulted in a wide range of improved outcomes including a wild play area, mud kitchen and other free play facilities which are co-located with the Cafe. These are open for use 7 days a week.In June 2022, HCCIC piloted a new social enterprise project, the Community Plant Nursery which has – to date - created 8 volunteering opportunities and part-time employment for 1 individual. Additionally, HCCIC is working to develop a range of community enterprise projects, co-created with existing volunteers and other local people, which make use of the gardens and it’s byproducts. For example, creating craft products e.g. lavender bags, to support ongoing development of enterprising activities which can create new opportunities for local people including people experiencing loneliness and social isolation, health conditions and seeking opportunities to connect with their local community.HCCIC has continued to develop it’s socially enterprising activities throughout this year, testing out new ways in which the company can generate income and develop ‘good jobs,’ for local people, including people who are furthest from the labour market. In response to requests from peers, during this accounting period, HCCIC began offering consultancy services to other local groups working to develop assets for their communities such as sharing skills, experiences and expertise in areas including governance, fundraising, organisational development, creative social enterprise and community engagement.HCCIC worked in partnership with a wide range of local sole traders and small enterprises to deliver a range of food pop up events throughout the Summer 2022 including opportunities for local creatives to sell their products directly to local people through craft fairs and events.Alongside pop-up food, drink, craft fair and local food producers events, the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations enabled local residents to participate in a range of activities.HCCIC secured support from Arts Council England to work with local disability-led theatre group, The Misfits to deliver a programme of arts performances to new audiences at the Ardagh site showcasing local talent. This series of performances took places in locations around the Ardagh site, creating new experiences for people attending and providing opportunities for local people with disabilities to perform to new, supportive audiences. The very positive response to this programme led to the development of further work with The Invisible Circus who performed at our annual Halloween Event in October. This was attended by more than 2,000 local residents of all ages.A wide range of community workshops, activities and social events has taken place throughout the year including:Creative Easter day of art and craft activities – 9 April 2022Horfield Common in Bloom – a local front gardens trail, arts & crafts and gardening activities – May/June/July 2022Platinum Jubilee Celebrations – 2-5 June 2022Summer BBQ (Jack in the Green) – 9 May 2022Horfield Common Dog Show – 18 June 2022Volunteer Sports Courts Maintenance Session – 19 November 2022Build To Give – 3 Dec 2022Garden Fair – Tues 6 Dec 2022Christmas Craft Fair – Sat 10 Dec 2022Carols on the Common – Weds 21 Dec 2022Health Research – for adults, teenagers, children & babies – Series of events, March 2023The company gratefully acknowledges support from the below funders without whom we could not have achieved the social impact that has been possible through this financial year. In addition to the earned income generated through commercial activities, this support enables us to continue to develop our work and activities in support of our community benefit aims.Coop Community FundQuartet Community FoundationWest of England Combined Authority (WECA)The National Lottery Community FundThe Social Enterprise Support Fund
