The company runs 'Sticky Bits,' a community cafe run for the benefit of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community. The cafe opened in June 2013 and during the year has provided a food and beverage service at an informal vanue to encourage social interaction and networking between members of the community, thus helping to strengthen community spirit and awareness. The cafe has also provided training courses in food hygeine and confidence building. These improve skills and encourage personal development, also leading to increased employability. The cafe is a safe space for those identifying as LGBT and is predominantely used by this group. We also run small groups and workshops specific to age and sexuality.
The company's stakeholders are members and allies of the LGBT community in Carlisle and surrounding areas. The directors have lived and worked in the community for a number of years and developed a business model based on their experiences talking to members of the community. The cafe was set up using consultations doen by Cumbria council in 2011 and from findings from past health consultations. We ask the current users what they think of the current service, how our offerings could be improved, what else they feel would benefit the community. We then make improvements based on this feedback.
