We continue to be Bristol's most comprehensive Community Bike Project, repairing and relocating unwanted bicycles. We aim to help people from all walks of life to get out on two wheels, and for it to be an inclusive and empowering experience. 2020-21 was a year of challenges for The Project, as it was for many organisations during the covid-19 pandemic. All of our community programmes were suspended for parts of the year due to social distancing requirements and our shop (which generates about 80% of our income) was running at reduced capacity. However, we still:- Continued to provide refurbished bikes free of charge to people who really need them, giving out over 198 in 2021-2021, and have now empowered over 2,500 people to become independently mobile since 2008.- Carried out hundreds of free repairs for people who have already had bikes through our programmes, typically supporting between 7 - 10 people in this way each week.- Continued to support young people with free bikes and repairs.- Continued to service the fleet of all ability bikes at the Bristol Family Cycling Centre, supporting cycling to be more accessible. - Reused and recycled hundreds of bikes and parts that would otherwise have gone to landfill.- Continued - when lockdown restrictions allowed - to offer volunteering opportunities at BBP, skilling people up in bicycle mechanics.- Provided a safe, non-judgemental workshop space that is co-operatively run and inclusive.More information is available in our 2020-21 Social Impact Report at https://thebristolbikeproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/BBP-Impact2020-WEB.pdf
The company’s stakeholders are paying and non-paying project-users, volunteers, paid staff, directors, co-op members and members of our local community. All of these groups are encouraged to participate in The Project’s running – both strategically and operationally. We hold four general meetings and one AGM each year, which were all well-attended. These allow stakeholders to air their views and make decisions on strategic matters. These meetings were held online during 2020-21.Additionally, operational meetings and regular meetings of various working groups are held to tackle day to day issues. Many of these groups were suspended for periods during 2020-21 as we scaled back operations in response to the pandemic. One group that remained very active was the New Premises Working group, which co-ordinated the purchase of new premises for The Project in March 2021. This group led significant outreach work with community members in our new neighbourhood in the six months leading up to the move, working to ensure that our new neighbours understand what The Project is and does and encouraging involvement. There was also significant internal consultation about the premises purchase and subsequent refurbishment.
