The Association of Local Environmental Records Centres (ALERC) is a membership organisation representing Local Environmental Records Centres (LERCs) across the United Kingdom. It promotes the position of LERCs as the definitive source of high quality, local, capture-resolution biodiversity data to inform the decision-making process, provides representation at both national and regional levels and seeks to enhance the professional standing of LERCs through its Accreditation scheme. ALERCs activities have benefitted the LERC community in the following ways:ALERC held formal meetings of the board of Directors and a number of informal, working monthly board meetings plus one annual members conference. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held during the 2022 Conference and took place on 19/10/2022.The ALERC conference continued to take place online, following a poll of the membership. By continuing to run its conference virtually ALERC ensured it was accessible to as many stakeholders as possible. Our membership is well represented by the attendance of Directors and the ALERC National Coordinator at various meetings and fora at local, regional and national level. LERCs were represented within the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and NBN Atlas Steering group, the Scottish Biodiversity Information Forum (SBIF) review as well as keeping up to date and working with Welsh LERC members. ALERC liaised with a number of national organisations and stakeholders, such as DEFRA and its agencies, particularly Natural England and the Environment Agency (EA), in support of the membership. ALERC represented its members in the following:Negotiated a UKHAb standard licence for LERCS with the company ECountability Began discussing national data sharing agreements with conservation organisations, including ARC Trust, Bumblebee Conservation Trust and NatureSpace on behalf of membersNegotiated a renewal of the data license with Environment Agency on members’ behalf.ALERC’s working groups have continued to focus on a variety of areas on behalf of members, including relevant sections of the Environment Act, (Biodiversity Net Gain and Local Nature Recovery Strategies) and their implications for LERCs and the continued support for ALERC member’s accreditation. ALERC also ran the following events for its members:Information exchange session on the species recording platform iRecordKnowledge transfer event on LERC governance
ALERC’s stakeholders are professionals working in Local Environmental Records Centres (LERCs), whom ALERC represent at local, regional and national levels. LERCs typically work in partnership with organisations at these levels including Local Authorities, Government Agencies, Wildlife NGOs/Charities and National Schemes & Societies.Consultation/communication and knowledge exchange with the membership takes place through: Appointing Directors from LERCs; Co-ordinating an active online Forum (the Knowledge Hub); Producing direct/electronic mailing; Providing an annual conference and AGM; Writing an annual report; Attending regional meetings; Encouraging membership engagement in formal projects; Leading ALERC working groups; and Publishing information via the ALERC website.ALERC consulted with its stakeholders in 2022 on whether to continue to hold its annual conference online, or revert to an in-person conference. The stakeholders opted for a continuation of the online version of the conference, and this was held in October 2022.ALERC employ a National Co-ordinator (the ANC) through the North & East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre. The aim of the ANC post is to facilitate collaborative working between Local Environmental Records Centres and other partner organisations throughout the UK.Wider stakeholder engagement is also ensured through attendance by the National Co-ordinator at regional LERC meetings.
